North Carolina Civil War History

"F.C. Watkins Dead: A well-known and highly respected citizen died at his home in this city last Saturday evening at the age of 62. He had been in declining health for several years and took to his bed about a month ago with nervous prostration from which he died.

He was a native of Virginia and moved to this city about fifteen years ago. He was a traveling salesman ever since - first for Sparger Tobacco Co. and when he died he was employed in that capacity by the Mount Airy Furniture Co. He was a brave confederate soldier and it is thought that the hardship undergoing during the war was responsible for his delicate condition in the afterlife (after the war).

He was married in early life to Miss Lyon of Durham County, who together with eight children, nearly all of, whom are grown, survive him.

His remains were buried at Oakdale cemetery last Monday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted from the late residences by his pastor, Rev. J. E. Albernethy. He died like he lived with a simple faith in the rest beyond the grave. His will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances."

Fleming Watkins married Fannie Lyon in 1871. They had eight children:

  1. John A. Watkins
  2. Giles Y. Watkins
  3. Fayette Watkins
  4. Jesse D. Watkins
  5. Fleming C. Watkins
  6. Fannie May Watkins
  7. Anna Laura Watkins
