Dorie: Woman of the Mountains - I read this book for a class assignment in American history. I found it an excellent book on mountain life in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. It was very well written and held my interest. Contains lots of information on legends, cooking, lifestyle and culture of mountain folk in the early 20th century.  Highly recommended. read Appalachian Culture a brief review of the book
