  • North Carolina was named for Charles ii King of England, Carolina is taken from  the Latin Carolus meaning Charles
  • John Locke and John Cooper founded the Carolina colony (now North & South Carolina)
  • Admission into Statehood November 1789
  • State Constitution was 1st ratified on December 1776
  • State Bird is the Cardinal.
  • Official State Flower is the Dogwood
  • Official State Fruit is Scuppernong - a variety of muscadine grape
  • Nickname was the Old North State, nicknamed Tar Heels during the Civil War
  • Official song - The Old North State adopted 1927
  • Motto - Esse Quam Videri means "to be rather than to seem" - placed on the NC Coat of Arms upon the Great Seal of the State in 1893
  • North Carolina has 34 state parks and recreation areas which receive over 12 million visitors a year.
  • The Western Mountains include over 43 mountain peaks reaching more than 6000 ft. Mt Mitchell located near Marion is the highest peak in the eastern USA.
  • There are over 1700 miles of highways designated as Scenic Routes. NCDOT Roadside environmental unit seeds and maintains flower beds across the state.
  • The oldest bridge in North Carolina still in use is the Pigeon River Bridge built in 1891 located near Waynesville North Carolina.
  • Cape Fear River Basin - information on the largest river basin in North Carolina. The Cape Fear river basin covers both the Piedmont and Coastal plains of North Carolina.
  • North Carolina Department of Transportation has the largest ferry system on the east coast.

    The University of North Carolina was chartered in 1789. It was the first state university in the United States.

Dorie: Woman of the Mountains - I read this book for a class assignment in American history. I found it an excellent book on mountain life in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. It was very well written and held my interest. Contains lots of information on legends, cooking, lifestyle and culture of mountain folk in the early 20th century.  Highly recommended. read Appalachian Culture a brief review of the book
