Tourist Attractions

Maine has been a leading vacation sport since 1870. There are lots of summer camps here.

The highest peak is Mt. Katahdin at 5268 ft. Mt Katahdin is the beginning of the Appalachian Trail.

Mt. Abraham is 4049 ft. Mt Bigelow is 4150 ft. Mt. blue is 3187 ft.

Moosehead lake is 117 sq. miles and the largest inland body of water in the state.

Other lakes are: Rangeleys, Chesuncook, Twin Lakes and Grand Lake.

Main rivers are: St. John, Penobscot, Kennebec, Androscoggin and the Saco River.

Portland Headlight is the oldest lighthouse on the Maine coast. It was built in 1791 and stands 101 ft high.

Kennebunk was settle in 1650. It is one of the oldest towns in Maine. It's public square has a canon from the Revolutionary War and a civil war monument.

Mt Desert Island is in Arcadia National Park is near Bar Harbor. Arcadia National Park was established in 1919 as Lafayette National park.

Baxter State Park is in Northern Maine.

Aroostook State Park is near Presque Isle.

Fort Knox State Park is at Prospect.

Memorial sites

Fort Edgecomb memorial is on Davis Island. The fort was built in 1808 to defend Wiscasset harbor.

Fort McClary memorial is the first fortification of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River.

Fort George Memorial is at Castine. The fortifications and earthworks were built by the British in 1779.

Fort William Henry memorial is at Bristol.
