Asheville North Carolina Lakes

There are lots of private carp lakes in the Asheville area that have tournaments scheduled throughout the summer. Many communities have small lakes or ponds for their residents to enjoy.

Lake Powhatan is 15 minutes from Asheville in Enka area. Go swimming, camping, hiking. Water is cold but refreshing on a hot summer day. There is a nice, well-kept beach with picnic tables and BBQ grills. Enjoy trout fishing in nearby Bent Creek

Lake Louise Weaverville is 10 minutes from Asheville, used to be called Lake Juanita. The lake is located at Merrimon and Lakeshore drive. No swimming, biking or boating allowed. However, you can fish (with permit) from the shoreline, walk and picnic. There is a playground, grills and picnic tables. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash.

Lake Junaluska Clyde within 30 minutes of Asheville Weddings, conferences, meetings, banquets and retreat facilities. Golf. Hike. Swim. Kayak. Raft. Attend Spiritual enrichment events.

lake julian park asheville nc Lake Julian Park is in South Asheville. There is a campground, picnic tables, BBQ grills, playground with swings and teeter tots. Fireworks on 4th of July, Paddle boats available for rent. Go fishing or sailing. No swimming! There is an undertow.

Western North Carolina Lakes near Asheville

lake lure from atop chimney rock park Lake Lure is located 45 minutes from Asheville. It is well worth taking a day to enjoy. There is a very nice clean public beach. Rent paddle boats and inner tubes. Take a boat tour of the lake. This is a nice quiet family getaway. Visit nearby Chimney Rock. Go trout fishing.

Lake James is located in Nebo near Marion North Carolina at the base of Linville Gorge. Fish for bass, trout, crappie, bream and catfish. Go camping, boating, swimming or hiking. It is 45 minutes to 1 hour from Asheville via I-40.

Fontana Lake - 2 hours west of Asheville near Bryson City. Fontana Lake has some 25 miles of water to explore. The entire north shore is the Smoky Mountain National Park. Primitive camping, carry your gear on your boat and pick you out a campsite. Wilderness hiking and camping here. Boats and houseboats for rent. Go camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and waterskiing. Hike the nearby Appalachian Trail. Fish for Bass Lake Trout, Catfish, Carp, Bream, Walleyed Pike, Crappie. The movie Nell was made here.

Lake Santeelah is located near Lake Fontana and Robbinsville. Lake Santeelah's shoreline is more than 75% National Forest. Fish for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bream, crappie and lake trout. There are marinas, boat ramps and camp sites. Go hiking, picnicking and swimming. Hike the nearby Appalachian Trail.

Lake Hiwassee is a reservoir surrounded by the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests near Murphy. It is 22 miles long northwest by southeast. Go fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, rafting.

Other WNC Lakes

Lake Adger is near Tryon. A community with marinas, hiking trails and walking paths, horseback riding trails, horse farms and parks. Go boating, fishing and swimming. See beautiful views of the mountains and lake.

Lake Fairfield is near Sapphire. Rent a canoe, kayak, paddleboat or an electric boat. Go fishing or swimming.

Nantahala Lake is a small lake located near Robbinsville and Bryson City. The lake has two public boating ramps. Fishing is ideal here. Nearby go Whitewater Rafting or trout fishing in the Nantahala river.

Lake Sequoyah is near Highlands. Go fishing, boating or swimming. Rent canoes or kayaks.

Lake Tahoma is a private lake near Marion in McDowell County. No speedboats or jet skis allowed.

Lake Toxaway is a private lake near Sapphire, Brevard and Highlands. Boats must be rented from area marinas. Go water-skiing, golfing, hiking, canoeing, fly fishing and lake fishing. There are summer camps here too.

Lake Glenville or Thorpe Reservoir is near Cashiers. There are 26 miles of shoreline. Go hiking and see the beautiful waterfalls that flow into the lake. Because of its elevation, evenings are cool all summer long.

Lake Summit is near the North and South Carolina border in Tuxedo. It is south of Hendersonville and within the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Asheville is about 40 minutes away. There are summer camps here. Go power boating, sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, swimming and fishing. Rent cottages by the lake some have with boat houses.
