Descartes was a French philosopher (1596-1650)

He was a Rationalist and champion of mathematics

Wrote discourse on method (1637). In book, the first and second rules were

  • “Never to receive anything as a truth which he did not clearly know to be such”
  • “I think, therefore I am”

Contributed to the discrediting of all the faulty science of the ancients.

His view was Mind belonged to man alone, and all else was matter.

Descartes philosophy on Mind and body was that the mind and body were two distinct entities. Each could exist without the other. Today, this is called mind body dualism.
