this week’s money saving tips

Posted in saving money at 3:24 pm by admin

I never buy small trash bags for the bathroom, bedroom or elsewhere. Instead, I use the plastic bags from the grocery store. In the bathroom, I use the plastic wrap that encases the toilet paper. To clarify, I buy the large economical pack of toilet paper. When I open the pack, I carefully cut the top open so when its through I can use it as a small trash bag to line my bathroom trash can. You can do this with paper towels too or any item you buy that is encased in plastic. Its a small savings, but its a savings. I also reuse bread bags. You can use the bread bag as a short term freezer bag, a lunch bag, a sandwich bag, a storage bag etc. Just be sure to empty out the crumbs before you use it. You can also use a clean empty butter container, coolwhip container etc for food storage  or taking leftovers for lunch to work. Be resourceful. Think about what you can use the item for before you throw something away.

saving money on groceries in Asheville 2

Posted in shopping, saving money at 2:10 pm by admin

I just came back from Harris Teeter grocery store in Asheville NC. I checked the sales before I went. Anyway, today is May 15th so you wont get the sales wrong for the week. The london broil roast and cube steak is buy one get one free. The cube steak is so tender you can cut it with a fork. This is a good deal. I had already stocked up from the last sale so I did not buy this week. Although I was tempted. I had to keep saying to myself its not a deal if you don’t need it.

tax relief checks arrival dates

Posted in gripe corner at 6:01 pm by admin

The news said several weeks ago that the tax relief checks should be out by May 9. today’s the 10th and I haven’t recieve it yet. And if you are reading this, then my guess neither have you. So, I checked out the irs website and found the schedule. It appears that the schedule is set to the last 2 digits of your social security number. If you had your tax refund direct deposit then you should have your relief check by May 16th. If your tax refund was by check the earliest date is May 16th and the lastest date is July 11th. It just depends on your social security number. The lower your last two digits of your social security number, the sooner your check will be here. So, if you want to know exactly when your check will be here, go directly to the source and visit irs.gov.

saving money tips for the kitchen

Posted in food, saving money at 7:24 am by admin

I noticed I throw a lot of bread away. The bread gets stale yet I always have to have fresh bread on hand in case someone wants a sandwich or toast or something. Throwing out food is a waste of money. Its that simple. Even though bread doesn’t cost that much, it adds up. So, I started thinking what can I do with this leftover bread? You can avoid the stale bread issue in the first place by putting the loaf of bread before it gets stale in the freezer. Make your sandwich with frozen bread for the next day’s lunch. Or if you have time, make some French toast with it. Stale bread is the key ingredient. Or cut up the bread in small squares, put it back in the bread bag, then smash it into bread crumbs. Use the crumbs or put the bag of crumbs in the freezer for later use. You can make stuffing out of the bread crumbs or use it as a topping for a casserole or use it in meatloaf in place of crackers or make bread pudding or another recipe. Another savings cause you don’t have to buy bread crumbs or stuffing mix for your recipes now.
