asheville zoo

Posted in attractions, wildlife at 8:21 am by admin

simply put, there is no asheville zoo. However, there is a WNC nature center that could pass as one. It is located at 75 Gashes Creek Road in East Asheville, NC. The facility is limited to animals, reptiles and plants that live in the Appalachain region. Most children in the Asheville area have visited the nature center via a school field trip. The center is open all year round except for some holidays. There is a small admission fee. They offer summer camp, classes, crafts, birthday parties and other programs for kids. If you are searching for the North Carolina State Zoo, see information on the Asheboro Zoo. The closest zoos to Asheville are the Greenville Zoo in SC and the Knoxsville Zoo in Tennessee.

Trout fishing in the mountains

Posted in wildlife at 1:54 pm by admin

The mountain streams around Asheville have 3 types of trout.  There are rainbows, brook trout and brown trout. They like ice cold water. You will need a trout stamp and a fishing licence to fish for trout except in Cherokee where you will need a tribal fishing permit. There’s a limit to how many you can catch so always check if you dont know. All Trout is good eating right out of the water into the frying pan. Of course, you gut and clean it first. Roll the fish in some cornmeal and throw it in a pan of hot oil. Season it with some salt and pepper. Cook it till the meat comes off the bone easily. I prefer to cut the heads off first but most people dont.

bears or not

Posted in wildlife, outdoors at 3:17 pm by admin

As I posted the other day, I had two black  bears visit my backyard. Now, I check out the backyard before I open the back door. I see a bear in every dark area in the bushes and trees (real or imagined I dont know). When I sit out on the porch, I do so with both my dogs. They will alert me to anyone or anything that comes into the yard. They are good for something after all. There was a big black shadow under one of my hemlock trees yesterday evening. The dogs didn’t bark but that doesn’t mean anything. They just might not have seen it. I called my son out to see if he could see if it was a bear or not. He said it wasn’t moving so we determined it was not. It was just the shadow of the tree. You cant be too careful when it comes to dealing with wild animals.

Bears in neighborhood

Posted in wildlife, outdoors at 1:20 pm by admin

The 2 bears that visited my backyard the other day didn’t return that I know of. They may have come back after dark. I did get a neighborhood newsletter that said that there have been numerous sightings of bears in the neighborhood. This is what it said to do:

  • Isolate potential food sources from the bears
  • Do not ever fed the bears
  • Do not leave grills outside
  • Put all bird feeders inside for the season
  • Do not let dogs run loose.
  • Make sure yard is clear before taking pets out
  • Keep garage doors closed
  • Remember that bear are good climbers and can easily climb decks without steps
  • When walking in neighborhood make plenty of noise so a bear is not surprised.
  • If your encounter a bear, do not run. Slowly move away from the bear

bears in backyard

Posted in wildlife, city, outdoors at 1:29 pm by admin

Yesterday evening, when the sun was going down, I had 2 young black bears come through my backyard. We live in the city limits of Asheville not 10 minutes from downtown. I’ve heard of a bear being in the neighborhood a few years ago but never saw one until now. The bears were sitting up between two of my cypress trees with people not 10 feet away. Then they stroll down the hill to my birdfeeders. Stuck their noses in the birdfeeder then continued across the yard to the pine trees where my neighbors driveway is at. They turned around and headed back to the Cypress Trees and sat there abit. Then disappeared. My boyfriend said they were 2 year olds based on their size. I called the law to see what to do. I’ve never had this happen before. They told me just to leave the bears alone and stay clear of them. That the bears were just looking for food cause its been so dry in the mountains here. My boyfriend said that the bears ate birdseed. That they probably were going through the neighborhood checking out everyone’s birdfeeder and most likely will be back. I didn’t think until after they left to take a picture. If they come back tonight, I will take their picture and post it here tomorrow.
