french broad river

Posted in outdoors at 8:31 am by admin

The French Broad river runs through 4 counties in NC: Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe and Madison then into Tennessee. It runs right through Asheville. The river offers lots of recreational opportunities. You can fish along the banks at the many parks along the banks in and around Asheville. Some of these parks have boat launches and picnic tables with grills. There’s something relaxing about sitting by a river and watching the water go by. Time seems to stop for awhile and you can reflect on your day.  You can go canoeing and kayaking. There are outfitters that will take you white water rafting too. You can watch birds and wildlife here. There are bald eagles, ospreys, muskrat, deer and sometimes bear.

hiking safety

Posted in outdoors at 2:56 pm by admin

The recent murders of an elderly couple hiking and of the Georgia hiker prompts this reminder of safety when hiking anywhere. Always hike with a group of people. the more the better. Remember safety in groups. You are less a target. Never hike alone especially if you are a woman or elderly. Stay on the trail. Tell someone who is not going with you, where you will be hiking. In some places, you should report to a ranger station before and after you hike. Don’t hike after dark, you could fall off a cliff if you are hiking in hilly terrain. Take bottled water with you. You can never be too careful. Remember, you only have one life and just cause you’ve never had anything bad happen to you before doesn’t mean it wont.

The Pisgah national forest is located near Brevard NC which is not far from Asheville. This is a beautiful area that covers over 500,000 acres. There are hiking trails, campgrounds, lakes and streams here. Sliding Rock, a natural waterslide, is located here too. Its lots of fun to slide on this rock but it cold water cause its a mountain stream. Plan to spend a day here and wear a pair of old cut off jeans. You will ruin a swimsuit on the rock. For safety sake, don’t stand and slide. You have to sit down. There are picnic tables here so bring your lunch. There’s trout in the water for those of you who like to fish.

horseback riding in Ashville NC

Posted in outdoors at 5:02 pm by admin

I went horseback riding here in Asheville NC when I was around 20 years of age. It was the first and the last time. I was so sore the next day that it was difficult to walk. Anyway, there are plenty of stables around the area that have bridal trails, jumping fields, pasture and full boarding for your horses. Some may rent you a horse for the day too. The scenery is beautiful especially in the fall. You can go horseback riding on the Biltmore Estate. They have an equestrian center. There are stables in Fletcher, Candler, East and West Asheville. Some offer riding instructions for beginners as well as advanced riders. The best thing to do when you arrive in town is to look in the Yellowpages of the phone book and call them.
