women’s suffrage movement asheville

Posted in city at 2:09 pm by admin

Here is a little history trivia about Asheville NC - the NC women’s suffrage movement started in a house across the street from Fuddruckers Restaurant on Charlotte Street. The house is now a private residence. North Carolina voted the amendment down and asked Tennessee to do so also. However, Tennessee voted yes and women got the right to vote. The first woman in the NC legislature was also from Asheville. A historical marker in front of Tripps Restaurant will give you more information.

blue ridge parkway detour

Posted in attractions, day trips at 1:01 pm by admin

Yesterday, the news said that there is a rock slide near Craggy Gardens on the blue ridge parkway. If you are traveling the parkway here you will have to take a detour. It should be cleared by next spring. Anyway, Craggy Gardens is a beautiful place to visit when the rhododendrons are blooming. the whole mountainside is covered with pink blooms. It actually called pink beds. Its located north of Asheville off the parkway and south of Mt. Mitchell. You can hike here too. But the trails are quite strenuous if you are out of shape. There are benches to rest along the trails though. You can take a picnic. There are tables, grills and rest rooms.

asheville weather

Posted in weather at 1:53 pm by admin

The weather here in Asheville has been a bit chilly in the mornings this week. It rained here yesterday afternoon. The temperture in the afternoon is still abit cold. Yesterday, it reached 53 degrees. You still need a jacket or sweater if you are planning to be out. Although, I had to remove my coat by noon. It was a bit warm to me. I see many people out walking or jogging in the neighborhood in shorts and short-sleeves. The dogwoods are blooming. That means dogwood winter as the old weather folk sayings say. It always gets colder here when the dogwoods bloom. It will get cold again when the blackberries bloom too. They call that blackberry winter. I have also seen it snow in early April so don’t put away your winter coat yet. We can still get some winter weather.

busy here at school

Posted in unca at 1:42 pm by admin

I am taking classes at UNCA this semester. I am only taking 2 classes but there is a lot of work involved. This is the main reason I haven’t posted in this blog in the last month. My classes are on North Carolina history and Native American Indian History. I just finished writing for NC history on the impact of European contact on the Catawba Indians of the Carolinas. I am in the process of writing a research paper for Native American Indian History on the mourning war raids and the treatment of captives. I have also had to give a presentation and book review. The mid-term exam for one class was a take home exam that was in essence a 7 page essay. The other class had an in class exam and a take home essay. So you can see I’ve been very busy. The final exams will be the first of May. One final will be another take home exam. It will most likely be another 7 page research paper. The take home exams are a lot harder than in class tests. The last take home exam took me 4 days, over 10 hours each day to research, organize and write. With all that work, I still ended up with a low B. Anyway, I am writing 2 pages a day on my research paper. I have 4 pages right now. I should be done by this tuesday. Then I have to proof read it, organize and very possibly rewrite. The last day of the semester for me is May 8. Can’t wait for this summer. Next fall, I am taking Civil War history and European history from 1848. When I finish with this semester, I will post all my essays and research papers in my history section of this website. In addition, I have lots of class notes on the history of NC, (includes asheville) so I will be posting these notes too.
