Kids Halloween Costume Ideas

Posted in events at 1:18 pm by admin

Its Halloween again. We’ll have lots of kids tonight trick or treating. Use to be, kids stuck to their own neighborhoods. They’d go around to their neighbors dressed in homemade costumes. Then, the neighbors handing out candy would try and guess who were the hobgoblins. that was a long time ago, when I was a kid. That ended about the time my kids came along. Now, the idea is to get as much candy as possible. Costumes from specialty stores and Walmart replaced homemade. That eliminated a lot of work and a lot of fun. I dressed my kids up as cats one year when they were small. It was a very simple costume. I put them in black tights, made a tail out of black construction paper, then cut two triangles for ears from that constuction paper and attached them to a hairband with tape. Then I used makeup to draw some whiskers on their faces. They were so so cute. It was better than any store bought costume and it was cheap. Another year, I dressed them as lumber jacks. I put them in a Flannel shirt, then used makeup to paint a beard on their faces. So, you see you can make simple and very inexpensive costumes for Halloween. I

Anyway, there are several locations around town that are giving out candy tonight.

weather update

Posted in weather at 1:36 pm by admin

The weather is quite cool. Its been in the 30s at night and by noon its in the mid-40s. You will need a sweater. The rain cleared a few days ago. Its very pretty and the air crisp. Nice walking weather. The leaves are still quite beautiful. Stunning is a better word cause it draws your eye.  The Mountains are draped in Reds, Oranges,  Yellows, Browns and still a little green here and there. My lawn is covered in fallen leaves yet my Maple still has plenty more to drop. So, I’ll wait a bit longer to start raking.

Rain Rain Rain

Posted in weather at 1:27 pm by admin

Its been raining here in the NC mountains for the last 3 days. Been quite chilly too. You will need a jacket for sure. The leaves are pretty regardless of the weather. The colors are so vivid and vibrant. They really catch your eye. I marvel at the beauty of it every year. You have to be careful when driving though cause leaves are all over many of the roads here. When leaves get wet, they can be as slick as ice.

Fall color is here!

Posted in attractions, outdoors at 3:07 pm by admin

The leaves are changing all over the mountains around Asheville. Its beautiful with all the orange, yellow and red fall colors. If you are coming to Asheville to see the Fall colors here, now is the time. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a popular scenic drive this time of year. There 4 entrances to the parkway here in Ashville. Be aware that people will drive slower on the parkway to look at the scenery especially the tourists. The speed limit is 45 miles per hour. And you best keep to the speed not only cause of the curvy mountainous road and the bicycle riders that tend to stay in the road here but the park rangers will get you. I was pulled one day a long time ago cause I went over the speed limit by 2 mph. Fortunately, I got by with a warning. If you are in a hurry, take another route. The interstate highway is very conveniently located throughout the city so most everything in the area is a short drive away. The weather is cool, in the lower 70’s. You will need a sweater or light jacket.

Leaves Update

Posted in outdoors at 1:35 pm by admin

Its the middle of October and the leaves are starting to change at least where you notice it. Remember, this is around the city of Asheville. It always changes a bit earlier in the higher elevations say around Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Pisgah. I haven’t been up on the Blue Ridge parkway this season yet but that is the way it always is. Its still cool here. In the mid 60 s. You need a sweater if you plan on staying outside any length of time. If you are coming to town, you might want to make hotel reservations in advance cause this is tourist season here. For lodging, see Asheville NC hotels.
