inexpensive Day trips

Posted in attractions, day trips at 2:40 pm by admin

One year I took my vacation week in the summer around the fourth of July. This is when I worked at Gerber products which has long since shut down operations in Asheville. Working in a factory and raising 2 kids I found it hard to come up with vacation money. So, to come up with ideas, I thought about where I could take my kids for a good vacation and not spend a whole lot of money. The answer was right here in the NC mountains where we live. Asheville is a major tourist destination so why not take advantage of all that’s in the area. That week was one of the best vacations we ever had and it didn’t cost us alot either cause we didn’t need a hotel room nor did we spend alot on gas money. We went to Lake Lure for the day. We went hiking off the Blue Ridge Parkway. We went to Lake Powhatan in Bent Creek near West Asheville. We had a picnic on the French Broad river. All these destinations were less than a 30 minute drive away from my home. My ex-in-laws used to go camping at Mills River for a week every year. The campground is about 15 minutes away from where they use to live. They could swim and fish. It was much cooler here too cause its in the woods and beside the river where you get a breeze or two. So, if you are looking to cut expenses and want to take an affordable vacation. Its do able. All you have to do is think of nearby places that tourists come to your area to see. You won’t regret it. You’ll save money, have a good time and learn something about where you live.

Cultural Hub

Posted in attractions, city at 2:44 pm by admin

Asheville is known to be one of the top 10 artist destinations in the USA. There’s lots of cultural things to do in the form of the arts like playhouses, art galleries and museums. UNCA has lots of cultural events during the year. When I attended UNCA, I had to take a humanities course. One of the requirements of the course was to attend a cultural event either on campus or off. So, I am know first hand that the college has some pretty good preformances. Other places that offer cultural events in the area include:

  • Asheville Bravo concerts
  • Asheville community Theatre
  • Asheville Lyric Opera
  • Black Mountain Center for the Arts - nearby Black Mt.
  • Brevard Music Center and Festival in nearby Brevard
  • Dance Theatre Art and BeBe Theatre
  • Diana Wortham Theatre
  • Fine Arts Theatre
  • Flat Rock Theatre in nearby Flat Rock
  • Folk Art Center off the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Grove Arcade Arts and Heritage Gallery
  • Southern Appalacian Repertory Theatre in nearby Mars Hill
  • Unto these Hills in nearby Cherokee

Asheville mountain air

Posted in city, outdoors at 2:28 pm by admin

Asheville has long been a favorite retreat for those who live at the coast. Many people come from Florida to getaway from the heat and enjoy the cool mountain air. In the 1800’s, doctors used to recommend people come here to rejuvenate particularly if the person had tuberculosis. Something about the mountain air here. Today, there are plenty of day spas in the area. The Grove Park Inn has a very nice spa where you can pamper yourself. There’s a golf course here too.

About that cool mountain air … the city of Asheville can get pretty hot (90’s) in the summertime. However, you can drive a short distance away up into the mountains or back into the woods by a stream and feel the difference in temperature. The drop in temperature is anywhere from 10-20 degrees depending on where you go.

For a free brochure on information on the annual women’s mountain retreat see Rites of Passage.

fishing Swannanoa River

Posted in wildlife, outdoors at 5:41 pm by admin

Many years ago, before my children were born, we’d go fishing on the Swannanoa River up around where Beacon blanket factory use to be. There’s a bridge there. The river was stocked with trout. If you timed it right and got there when the stock truck turned out all those trout, you could catch a bunch of fish. Once, a friend of ours went with us, he didn’t have his fishing licence. My ex was catching one fish after the other and turning them loose after he caught his limit. Our friend couldn’t stand not being able to catch any (its a country thing). So, he said let me catch just one. So, my ex handed him his pole. At the very instant, our friend took the fishing pole, a couple with backpacks walked up and asked how many fish we’d caught like any person would. It turned out these two were rangers undercover. Our friend got a ticket that day.

thunderstorms

Posted in weather at 2:28 pm by admin

Its been hot and muggy today here in the NC mountains. I hear a thunderstorm coming in the distance. This isn’t unusual for this time of year though. We usually get a thunderstorm in the hot afternoon to break the heat.
