Bears in neighborhood

Posted in wildlife, outdoors at 1:20 pm by admin

The 2 bears that visited my backyard the other day didn’t return that I know of. They may have come back after dark. I did get a neighborhood newsletter that said that there have been numerous sightings of bears in the neighborhood. This is what it said to do:

  • Isolate potential food sources from the bears
  • Do not ever fed the bears
  • Do not leave grills outside
  • Put all bird feeders inside for the season
  • Do not let dogs run loose.
  • Make sure yard is clear before taking pets out
  • Keep garage doors closed
  • Remember that bear are good climbers and can easily climb decks without steps
  • When walking in neighborhood make plenty of noise so a bear is not surprised.
  • If your encounter a bear, do not run. Slowly move away from the bear

bears in backyard

Posted in wildlife, city, outdoors at 1:29 pm by admin

Yesterday evening, when the sun was going down, I had 2 young black bears come through my backyard. We live in the city limits of Asheville not 10 minutes from downtown. I’ve heard of a bear being in the neighborhood a few years ago but never saw one until now. The bears were sitting up between two of my cypress trees with people not 10 feet away. Then they stroll down the hill to my birdfeeders. Stuck their noses in the birdfeeder then continued across the yard to the pine trees where my neighbors driveway is at. They turned around and headed back to the Cypress Trees and sat there abit. Then disappeared. My boyfriend said they were 2 year olds based on their size. I called the law to see what to do. I’ve never had this happen before. They told me just to leave the bears alone and stay clear of them. That the bears were just looking for food cause its been so dry in the mountains here. My boyfriend said that the bears ate birdseed. That they probably were going through the neighborhood checking out everyone’s birdfeeder and most likely will be back. I didn’t think until after they left to take a picture. If they come back tonight, I will take their picture and post it here tomorrow.

Sliding rock Brevard

Posted in attractions, day trips, outdoors at 2:33 pm by admin

Sliding Rock is near Brevard in the Pisgah National Forest which is not far from the Asheville area. We had a picnic at Sliding Rock some time ago. There are picnic tables and grills here which make it nice. This is a fun place. You sit and slide down a rock which is in a river into a pool of water. The water is ice cold and refreshing. The rock is slippery as a stream of water contantly flows over it. You should be careful. Do not stand and slide. This is not a man-made attraction rather its a natural waterslide. Its best to wear an old pair of cut off jeans cause if you wear a bathing suit, the rock could ruin it. You can spend all day here easily.

Outdoor Recreation

Posted in attractions, outdoors at 11:58 am by admin

The Asheville area has plenty of Outdoor recreation to offer. You can sit on the bank of the French Broad river and fish all day if you like. You can put on your waders and go to nearby Cherokee for some of the best trout fishing around. You can go up in the mountains to hike, bike or rock climb. You can go canoeing, Kayaking or boating on the many lakes, streams or rivers in the area. There are plenty of outfitters and guides in town to help you do want you want to do. You can go bird watching in the woods or from your back porch. I have a variety of birds come everyday to my birdfeeder not to mention the squirrel that tries to get into the squirrel proof feeder too.

this week’s weather

Posted in weather at 8:15 pm by admin

This week has been in the high 70’s or low 80’s here in the NC mountains. Everyday in the late afternoon, we have had a thunderstorm or its threatened to storm. However, it’s been pretty in the mornings and every afternoons.
