carp fishing

Posted in wildlife, outdoors at 1:56 am by admin

many years ago, before my kids were born, we’d go carp fishing. I’d read a book while my ex-husband fished. We’d go to one of the area carp lakes where you paid to fish all night. He’d make his own fish bait by making a flour dough and putting vanilla in it. He claimed the vanilla got the carp to bite. I dont know if it worked or not. Carp stink. They are really just overgrown gold fish and scavenger fish. They give off ammonia. Some people eat them but not me. We’d always throw the fish back that we’d catch. My ex always said that carp was a lot of fun to catch cause they put up a good fight. I guess you’d have to be a fisherman to understand that.

lunch at Asiana

Posted in restaurants at 11:55 pm by admin

Today was my daughter’s 27th birthday, so we went to lunch at Asiana restaurant in South Asheville. We went to lunch here today because if its your birthday your meal is free here. Thats a good deal. We went early about 11:30 and was out by 12:15. We like eating here cause the food is good, its cheap and you dont have to wait to be served cause its buffet. But, since its a buffet, you really have to watch how much you put on your plate and how many times you go back. Buffet is not good for your diet or your health cause you tend to want to get your money’s worth and therefore easily overeat.

flat rock grille

Posted in restaurants at 7:28 pm by admin

We just ate out at flat rock grille in South Asheville near Harris Teeter. I had ate here several years ago, I wasn’t impressed then. I ordered chicken nuggets in a seafood restaurant what did I expect. However, today we decided to try the restaurant again. I ordered grilled shrimp salad. I requested the shrimp on the side. The salad and shrimp were fantastic. The salad had feta cheese, onion rings and homemade salad dressing. My son ordered the chicken nuggets. He enjoyed them with a salad. There were about 8 nuggets - much more than he could eat. The service was good. The coffee was great. The restaurant atmosphere was that of a high quality restaurant. Our meals and drinks cost about $32.00 without tip. The average meal on the menu was about $15.00. If you are careful, you can eat reasonably here. They have sandwiches and salads with chicken or shrimp too. On the more expensive side, there are steaks and salmon.

cheeseburgers in paradise restaurant

Posted in restaurants at 6:31 pm by admin

We just ate out at Cheeseburgers in paradise restaurant. This is Jimmy Buffets chain restaurant. It is located on Tunnel Rd Asheville next to the Longhorn restaurant. This is one of my favorite places to eat. I ordered the St. Bart’s Citrus Chicken with rice and brocolli. The brocolli is the best I’ve ever eaten. Its simmered in a special citrus sauce - better than I can fix it. Anyway, my son had the cheeseburger with fries. My granddaughter ordered the child’s plate of grilled cheese with rice. We had an appetizer of onion rings. The meals, appetizer and drinks all cost $32.00 without tip. We ate at about 4:30pm on a Friday. The place was not busy. The waiter was friendly. The service was good. We eat here about once a month. Usually they have live music. We have visited this restaurant for lunch and dinner and the menu and the price didn’t differ.

fishing the rivers around Asheville

Posted in outdoors at 4:18 pm by admin

Many years ago, before my children were born, I went on fishing trips to the many rivers and creeks around Asheville. We’d usually go to the Swannanoa River or the French Broad. My ex-husband wore his waders. He’d catch brim, sun perch and trout. The Swannanoa River is stocked with Trout. I’d sit on the bank with a book. I was always leary of being anywhere on the bank of a river cause I am scared of snakes. My ex-husband used to go with his dad night fishing on the banks of the French Broad River. They’d sit there with a lantern and fish all night. There are alot of good spots along the French Broad river to sit and there are lots of parks here too. Some have picnic tables, grills and a place to launch boats, canoes etc.
