tripps again

Posted in restaurants at 3:28 pm by admin

we went out to eat last night at around 6:00pm. It was a Saturday. We started looking on tunnel rd for a place to eat where we didn’t have to wait. We tried O’Charleys thinking that since it was off the road we wouldn’t have to wait. Wrong! It would have been a 15 minute wait so we went on down the road. The Outback restaurant looked full so did Red Lobster so we decided to go downtown Asheville and ended up at Tripps restaurant. It wasn’t too crowded we were able to get seated immediately. As always, the waiter and service were excellent. Our dinners cost with tip about $40.00. I ordered the New Orleans chicken and shrimp. I wasn’t too pleased with the dish cause it was way too spicy for me. Next time, I will simply order grilled chicken with the vegetable of the day. They have steaks which is always a good choice but I didn’t want to pay $16.00 or more for my meal and the size of the steak was way too much anyway. This is true about any where you go. Why can’t restaurants serve smaller portions and cut the price abit? A serving size is 3oz. not 14oz plus. Most restaurants serve one person enough for 3 to 4 meals in one sitting.

black bears

Posted in wildlife at 4:48 pm by admin

We use to go up to Craggy Gardens off the Blue ridge parkway at night. Its a short drive north of Asheville. We’d watch the black bears try to get into the bear proof trash dumpsters here. We wouldn’t dare get out of the car cause you dont want to get close to these animals in the wild or anywhere else for that matter.  A few years back, there was a bear foraging for food from the Waffle house dumpster off of I-26. This animal has most likely come from the Biltmore Estate where there is plenty of forested land to roam. Biltmore Estate is not far from this location of Asheville. I also had a friend at work  tell me that one morning there was a bear in his trash can at home. He didn’t dare go outside till the bear was gone either.

ramps

Posted in attractions, day trips at 4:10 pm by admin

The annual ramp festival is held this year on May 6th in Waynesville which is west of Asheville. Ramps are very similar to onions only they are stronger. My ex-husband use to like to eat ramps. I didn’t. He’d cook them in scrambled eggs or eat them raw. They stink. The worse part of it is, the odor comes out of the pores of the skin. After my ex-husband ate ramps, I always slept in the other room cause I couldn’t stand the smell. I know of a lot of people who love eating ramps. They say if you eat ramps you wont smell them on others just like garlic and onions.

wasps, bees, hornets

Posted in wildlife, outdoors at 7:18 pm by admin

Every spring the battle begins the wasps, yellowjackets and hornets vs. me. I arm myself with the wasp spray. Any spray will do. The wasps build their nests under my stairs and deck. I spray them when I notice them. I took down my shutters so the wasps could not build there. Last year, I had a yellow jacket nest under my central air conditioner unit outside. What was strange is, the service man was able to service it, spray a few bees and told me that bees did not bother him. He didn’t get stung. I tried to spray them, but I could not get a good shot. The spray went over the nest. Someone said to use gas, I said not there. It would burn my house down. so, I went to get some seven dust from Walmart so I could bury the yellowjackets under it. The clerk at Walmart told me to try bleach. I cut some hose and attached a funnel to it. Then I put the hose in the hole under the air conditioner and poured the bleach in. It took care of the problem. I’ve been told that yellowjackets dont rebuild a nest in the same place. So, hopefully I dont have another nest in this location again. The clerk at Walmart told me to try bleach. sitting on the porch

I sit on my porch everyday in the afternoon. There is a bird that goes into the holly tree below. Its building a nest or tending on babies. The dogwoods are dropping their dead blossoms and turning green. The weather is warm. You can sit on the porch without a jacket though it gets a bit cool when the wind blows.
