Winchester - The Legacy of the Romans

The Romans left behind a network of towns built on the sites of Celtic settlements or Roman military camps. The suffix Chester in English place names is derived from the Latin castra meaning camp.

Winchester was England's first capital.

William the Conqueror was crowned both in Winchester and London.

Winchester Cathedral

The Winchester Cathedral is Norman and older than the Cathedral at Canterbury. The Norman transepts and tower are still intact, however the Nave and choir were replaced by William of Wykeham in the late 14th century.

Castle of Henry the III - The Great Hall is all that is left of the old castle. Within the Great Hall of Henry the III's Castle, Sir Walter Raleigh was condemned to death by James I.
