Blakes the first boutique hotel of its kind in London the world even evokes past and current intrigues and dark mysteries. The Opium Den that is The Chinese Room- sits in subterranean splendor next to the critically acclaimed restaurant. The room itself the epitome of decadence and comfort dedicated to the likes of Chanel and Dietrich is the place to be before or after enjoying the delights of an evening in London. Marlene herself is rumored to appear under certain lights and influences leaning seductively on the piano. The bar is also hugely popular with Londons fashionable it crowd who regularly pop in for a sharpener Blakes rooms are dramatic interpretations of deep- rich tones and subtle contrasts. The compositions are startling- luxurious and operatic. Some of the most astonishing interiors in the world can be found here as countless design magazine features have proven. What might have easily slipped into being over the top is somehow neither too saccharine nor too precious. Rather- these interiors are fascinating exercises in design imagination- choreographed by the masterly eye of Anouska Hempel herself. Right down to the smallest scale of carefully placed accessories or cushions- the relationship between objects and between forms and fields is studied and carefully resolved. • 007: Huge windows in 007- the largest suite- a magnificent 4 poster European king sized bed- hand painted white floors- large Victorian drawing room with fireplace- bookcases- all beige and white- light and lovely with red accents. The original double-glazed French doors are still used for the entrance. This suite connects to the delightful and delicious- light and airy room next door- again in the same tones.
• Corfu suite: The Corfu Suite- white on white on white- Anouska Hempels original white Suite. A huge romantic linen clad 4-poster bed with swaths of Muslin mosquito nets makes this suite mysterious and magical. Antique bed linens are mixed with crisp Frette sheets- soft- sumptuous and sensuous as is the lighting. Big white linen cushions on the floors and sofa. There is also pretty little green courtyard just outside your door for drinks or a quiet meander.
• Directors double: European King sized beds- French gilded antique swan beds or 4 posters. Pale grey Venetian rooms- sparkling- moody and state of the art splendour. Antique Beidermeier 4 poster beds with stencilled floors and gold accents. European king sized campaign bed- gold and black- Napoleonic- theatrical- decorative items and prints from Versailles. European king sized La Carmona beds- rusts- saffrons- spicy colours- corralled Japanese Shuijo horses around the walls.
• Luxury double: European Queen sized antique swan beds- pale grey and gold- exciting gabled rooms in the Parisian manner. Print bathrooms- grey marbled baths; chaise lounge and Japanese storage boxes make these rooms delightfully eccentric. Or; European king sized low lying bed- Blanc divoire furniture- Japanese screens and elegant Chinese antique cupboards- looking onto a double balcony- front and top of the hotel.
• Luxury suite: European King sized beds- sumptuous 4 posters- ranging styles and colours. Very tall ceilings- wonderful Antique prints- French windows leading to private balconies- secluded- soft and sensuous.
