The Civil War
The Civil War started in 1860 and continued until 1865. For a while, Alexander managed to keep all of his sons out of the war by paying someone to serve for them. This was common practice for many of the well to do families of the old South and North.
The war took its toll. All six of Alexander's sons were in the Confederate army. Three sons were killed. They were, Mat, Haywood, and Fayette. The three surviving sons were Thomas Alexander, Fleming, and William.
