Cartoon character pictures prior to 1840 were a full size sketch or drawing used on paintings, mosaic art, or tapestry as part of the pattern. One of the most famous cartoon character artists was William Hogarth who used cartoon characters to depict human suffering for social satires. Cartoon Characters have been used for political satires, social documentaries and commentaries as well as for entertainment. During World War II, Bill Mauldin created the cartoon characters, Mutt and Jeff, two unkempt GIs who told the hardships of the front with subtle humor.
